Pretty hard to get into at the start...at first I'd thought this was the second book in the series because the main character speaks about an event in past tense, that occurs directly before the book starts. But it's absolutely inscrutable what exactly happened and why this changes the character's situation--just baffling. And the writing style is aloof, which doesn't help matters.
But get past that--and it's an fairly enjoyable mystery, and the writing style becomes enjoyable and very suitable to the story's style. So I'll read more.
